Newcastle United has acquired a significant portion of the historic Leazes Terrace buildings near St. James’ Park as the club continues to evaluate options for the future of its stadium infrastructure.
According to reports, the Grade I-listed properties were purchased for a fee believed to be between £20 million and £25 million. The buildings, located opposite St. James’ Park, have long been considered one of the main obstacles to any large-scale stadium expansion project.
In a statement, Newcastle described the acquisition as part of its “long-term planning” while assessing “credible and feasible options” regarding the club’s future home.
The club added that the purchase would provide greater flexibility for future development decisions while also supporting its ambitions and responsibilities to the local community in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Despite speculation surrounding a possible expansion of St. James’ Park, Newcastle stressed that the acquisition does not confirm a final decision on whether the club will renovate its current stadium or pursue an entirely new venue.
Currently, St. James’ Park holds around 52,300 spectators, with expansion estimates ranging between 60,000 and 62,000 seats due to architectural constraints. A potential new-build stadium, meanwhile, could reportedly accommodate between 65,000 and 70,000 fans.
Newcastle also stated that there are no immediate plans to alter the use of Leazes Terrace, which currently serves as student accommodation.
The club is continuing feasibility studies on a possible development at nearby Leazes Park, adjacent to St. James’ Park, as it weighs the long-term future of one of English football’s most iconic venues.
