The City of Naples has officially unveiled a €200 million redevelopment project for the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with construction scheduled for completion by 2030.
The renovation will increase the stadium’s capacity from 54,732 to 63,300 seats and forms a key part of Naples’ bid to host matches at UEFA Euro 2032.
Athletics track to be removed
One of the project’s most significant changes is the removal of the athletics track, allowing the construction of a new lower tier that will bring supporters closer to the pitch and create a more football-focused atmosphere.
The redevelopment also includes:
- 16 premium skyboxes
- New parking facilities
- Expanded green public spaces
- Fully connected digital infrastructure
- Energy and water self-sufficient systems
- Enhanced accessibility throughout the venue
Central to Euro 2032 ambitions
Naples Infrastructure Councillor Edoardo Cosenza said the proposal has already been presented to both the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and UEFA as part of the city’s Euro 2032 bid.
He stressed that the project extends beyond the stadium itself, covering transport infrastructure, airports, rail connections, hotels and overall hospitality capacity required to stage a major international tournament.
Mayor Gaetano Manfredi added that the stadium’s location in the Fuorigrotta district, served by three metro lines, meets UEFA’s emphasis on public transport accessibility.
Stadium to remain operational
The municipality also confirmed that the stadium is expected to remain operational throughout the redevelopment. By expanding the upper tier during construction, Naples aims to avoid significant reductions in matchday capacity.
Door remains open for Napoli
The announcement also comes amid ongoing discussions with Aurelio De Laurentiis, who has previously advocated for the construction of a new stadium rather than renovating the Maradona.
Mayor Manfredi said he hopes to continue discussions with the club over the future use of the redeveloped venue, adding that the priority is to serve both the city and Napoli supporters while ensuring Naples remains part of Italy’s UEFA Euro 2032 plans.
