Como are working to upgrade the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium to meet UEFA regulations so that it can host international matches. However, the Mapei Stadium is also being considered as an alternative venue.
Como’s European ambitions
Como’s 5–0 victory against Pisa has reinforced their push for a top-four finish in Serie A, which would qualify them for the UEFA Champions League—potentially the club’s first-ever participation in European competitions.
The last time Como played in Europe was in the 1980/81 season, when they competed in the Mitropa Cup.
Stadium plans
The club is working to adapt the Sinigaglia Stadium to UEFA standards, with the goal of completing the upgrades by September 2026. The Champions League group stage is set to begin between 8–10 September 2026.
If Como start the competition away from home, their first home match would take place on 13–14 October.
The same planning applies to the Europa League. However, for the Conference League, which involves earlier qualifying rounds, the stadium may not be ready in time.
In that case, Como have already contacted Sassuolo to potentially play at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia. This venue could also be used for other European competitions if the Sinigaglia upgrades are not completed in time.
Financial Fair Play (UEFA)
Como will also have to comply with UEFA’s Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations (the updated Financial Fair Play system).
The club’s financial report as of June 30, 2025 shows a loss of approximately €105 million.
While there should be no immediate issues in the first year, a Settlement Agreement with UEFA could be required in subsequent seasons. This agreement:
- May include financial and sporting sanctions
- Can last between 2 and 4 years
- Remains valid even if the club does not qualify for European competitions in the following years
A similar case recently involved Aston Villa.
Financial rules
UEFA’s squad cost rules limit spending relative to revenue:
- 2023: 90%
- 2024: 80%
- 2025 onwards: 70%
This requires clubs to carefully manage wages and transfer spending.
Commercial expansion
Como are also growing off the pitch. As part of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic period, the club has opened two temporary stores:
- In Cortina d’Ampezzo
- Near Piazza San Babila in Milan
