The AFL and Telstra have announced a major leap in sports technology through a two-year partnership with Champion Data to trial advanced Optical Tracking Technology at Marvel Stadium. Set to commence in mid-2026, this trial positions the Docklands precinct as the primary innovation hub for the league, with more than 40 high-definition cameras being installed throughout the venue.
This new system is a significant upgrade from the current 14-camera setup, creating a data ecosystem that tracks every player and ball movement with centimeter-level accuracy and near-zero latency. AFL Executive General Manager Bec Haagsma stated that this technology puts Marvel Stadium at the forefront of shaping the game’s future, impacting everything from officiating to player welfare.
Core Strategic Pillars of the Trial
The partnership aims to deliver measurable results across five key areas:
- Officiating Support: Providing advanced goal-line technology to assist match officials.
- Performance & Medical: Utilizing high-quality vision for injury prevention and real-time concussion assessment.
- Coaching Innovation: Enabling real-time team structure analysis and virtual reality (VR) coaching tools.
- Fan Engagement: Integrating “Next Gen” statistics into broadcasts and digital content.
- Accessibility: Enhancing the “Telstra Touch and Track” initiative for fans with vision impairment.
To support this data-heavy program, Telstra has rebuilt the stadium’s network infrastructure, integrating 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi 6 to handle the massive data throughput required for live analytics.
