The International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO) has announced that Alex Phillips has stepped down as its Secretary General, ending his tenure after leading a significant internal restructuring of the global players’ union.
Phillips, who was appointed in November 2024, oversaw the implementation of a wide-ranging reform package approved by FIFPRO’s member unions as part of a broader review of the organization’s governance framework.
Reflecting on his departure, Phillips described serving as Secretary General as a privilege and thanked the board, member unions, staff and colleagues for their support throughout his tenure.
“Serving as FIFPRO Secretary General has been a privilege, and I am proud of what we achieved together. I would like to thank the Board, our member unions, the staff and colleagues across the organization for their trust, support and collaboration. I wish FIFPRO every success in its mission to strengthen the voice of professional footballers around the world,” Phillips said.
FIFPRO President Sergio Marchi praised Phillips for his contribution during a key period in the organization’s development.
“Alex made a valuable contribution to FIFPRO during an important stage in our organization’s development. His work implementing the reforms approved by our member unions has strengthened FIFPRO and positioned the organization well for the future,” Marchi said.
During his time in office, Phillips focused on strengthening FIFPRO’s operational structure and executive management while working closely with the board, staff and member unions throughout the transition process.
FIFPRO has not yet announced who will succeed Phillips as Secretary General.
