Bayer Leverkusen have extended the contracts of two key figures in their executive structure, with CEO Fernando Carro remaining at the club until 2029 and sporting managing director Simon Rolfes extending his deal until 2031.
The Bundesliga club has opted for continuity in its management following one of the most successful periods in its history. Both Carro and Rolfes have been part of Bayer Leverkusen’s leadership structure since 2018 and have overseen a significant transformation on and off the pitch.
Carro joined Leverkusen in July 2018 after almost 25 years in various positions at Bertelsmann. The Spanish executive is also a member of the board of the European Football Clubs (EFC), formerly the European Club Association (ECA), and sits on the supervisory board of the German league.
Rolfes has an even longer association with Leverkusen. He joined the club as a player in 2005 and made 377 appearances before moving into management. He subsequently became one of the club’s leading figures in sporting operations.
During their time at the top of the club, Leverkusen have enjoyed the most successful period in their history. Under former head coach Xabi Alonso, the club won its first Bundesliga title and the German Cup, while also reaching the UEFA Europa League final in 2024.
Werner Wenning, chairman of Bayer 04’s shareholders’ committee, praised the work of both executives and highlighted their contribution to the club’s recent success.
“Fernando Carro and Simon Rolfes have led the club in an outstanding manner in recent years. The greatest sporting successes in our history are the result of their work. Both represent competence, reliability and continuity,” Wenning said.
The contract extensions underline Leverkusen’s commitment to maintaining stability in its executive structure as the club looks to build on its recent sporting and commercial growth.
