The committee had initially listed tailgating as banned on its official website, citing “FIFA policy.†The decision sparked immediate backlash from North American fans, for whom the pre-game ritual is a defining part of the live sports experience—especially at Gillette Stadium, home to the New England Patriots, where tailgating is deeply ingrained in game-day culture.
A clarification of rules
After the public response, local organizers sought clarification from FIFA. A spokesperson confirmed that, following discussions, no tournament-wide ban on tailgating exists.
“Based on prior information that FIFA communicated to Boston Soccer 2026, it was both our understanding and the host venue’s understanding that ‘no tailgating’ was a tournament-wide FIFA rule,†the spokesperson said. “We are pleased to share that tailgating will be permitted at Boston Stadium like any other event hosted at the stadium, as there are no venue or local public safety restrictions in place that would prohibit it.â€
