The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched the bidding process for the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), inviting its 54 member associations to submit hosting proposals.
CAF described AFCON as the largest sporting event on the African continent and one of the biggest football tournaments globally, attracting more than 3.2 billion television viewers and generating over 6 billion digital views worldwide.
The governing body has developed a new bidding framework for the three tournaments in collaboration with independent adviser PwC, alongside technical, financial and external legal consultants. According to CAF, the framework is designed to ensure a transparent, credible and ethical selection process aligned with international best practices.
The announcement comes ahead of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Pamoja 2027, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda between 19 June and 17 July 2027.
CAF also confirmed that it plans to stage a senior men’s national team competition every year, except during FIFA World Cup years, underlining the confederation’s strategy to expand the commercial and sporting footprint of African football.
The decision follows the growing commercial momentum of AFCON. CAF recently reported that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco delivered a more than 90% increase in competition revenues and attracted 23 sponsors, while preliminary audience data indicated a 61% increase in viewership across European, Asian and South American markets.
Further announcements regarding CAF national team competitions are expected in the coming months as the confederation continues preparations for the next decade of continental football events.
