The UEFA Champions League reached a global TV audience of 1.9 billion during the 2025/26 season, its highest level since 2017/18, as rising exposure strengthens the commercial proposition of European club football’s leading competition ahead of a new rights cycle.
New data compiled by Nielsen Sports puts the competition’s global fanbase at more than 860 million people, underlining the scale of the Champions League as UEFA prepares to launch its next commercial cycle from the 2027/28 season.
The growth is also translating into greater value for sponsors. Nielsen estimates that the Champions League’s sponsor media value increased by between 30% and 40% year on year.
The average sponsorship agreement with the competition is now worth more than $50m annually, according to Nielsen, with further growth expected when the next commercial cycle begins.
Digital exposure adds to sponsorship value
The Champions League’s commercial reach extends well beyond television.
Content published by UEFA, participating clubs, players and major sports media generated more than 1.51 billion social media interactions during the season.
The competition’s official Instagram and TikTok accounts generated an average media value of close to €85,000 per post, highlighting the growing role of social platforms in the commercial valuation of major sports properties.
For sponsors, the combination of live broadcast exposure, digital engagement and direct access to a global fanbase is becoming increasingly important as rights holders look to maximise the value of their partnerships.
New commercial cycle begins in 2027
The figures come as UEFA and the European Football Clubs joint venture UC3 prepare for a significant change in the commercial structure of European club competitions.
The 2026/27 season is the final year of the current commercial cycle. From 2027/28, Relevent will take on the global commercial mandate for the UEFA club competitions for six seasons through 2032/33, covering media rights, sponsorship and licensing.
The new model is expected to offer more flexible and customisable commercial packages, while integrating opportunities across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
The sale of media rights for the next cycle is already underway.
With its global TV audience reaching 1.9 billion and its fanbase exceeding 860 million, the Champions League enters the 2027 commercial cycle with a stronger proposition for broadcasters, sponsors and UEFA’s club partners.
For UEFA and the clubs, the challenge will be to convert that expanding global reach into higher commercial revenues across the new six-year rights cycle.
