Bears Stadium Saga: Illinois and Indiana Battle for Chicago’s Future Home

The tug-of-war for the Chicago Bears’ new stadium has reached a critical juncture as the franchise weighs competing offers from Arlington Heights, Illinois, and Hammond, Indiana. In a recent update from the NFL annual league meeting in Phoenix, Bears Chairman George McCaskey and CEO Kevin Warren signaled that while both sites remain “excellent” options, the clock is ticking for lawmakers to provide legislative and financial clarity.

Key Obstacles for Arlington Heights and Hammond

The Bears currently own 326 acres in Arlington Heights, but progress has stalled due to two primary hurdles:

  • Infrastructure Funding: The team is seeking approximately $800 million in state-driven aid for surrounding infrastructure.
  • Tax Certainty: A “mega-projects bill” is required in Illinois to ensure long-term property tax stability.

Conversely, Indiana has moved aggressively with new legislation creating the Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority. However, the 340-acre site in Hammond still requires extensive environmental vetting and infrastructure assessment before a deal can be finalized.

The Push for a “World-Class” Fan Experience

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has joined the conversation, urging a swift resolution. Goodell noted that while Soldier Field is steeped in tradition, it lags behind modern standards for technology and fan experience.

Bears leadership echoes this sentiment, with Kevin Warren emphasizing that the decision will impact the franchise for the next 30 to 50 years. The team has pledged $2 billion in private funding for the construction, highlighting the massive scale of the investment.
