Chicago Bulls reinvent sponsorship strategy through data-driven insights

The Chicago Bulls are reshaping their sponsorship business by embracing advanced analytics, aiming to provide brands with clearer evidence of return on investment in an increasingly competitive sports marketing landscape.

As sponsorship spending in the United States continues to surge, rights holders are under growing pressure to demonstrate measurable business outcomes rather than simply offering brand visibility. According to industry estimates, U.S. sports sponsorship expenditure rose by 122% between 2015 and 2025, reaching $30.5 billion.

To strengthen their commercial proposition, the Bulls have spent the past two years developing a data-driven measurement framework in collaboration with sports rights company Klutch and consulting giant PwC.

The system combines credit card transaction data, mobile location insights and consumer behavior analytics to understand how fans spend their money beyond game day. It tracks where supporters go after attending matches, how much they spend, and which brands benefit from their engagement with the franchise.

By leveraging these insights, the Bulls can offer sponsors a more comprehensive picture of their impact, extending well beyond exposure inside the arena.

“We’re showing the value that exists outside the venue,” said Megan Donovan, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships at the Chicago Bulls, emphasizing that brands increasingly expect measurable outcomes from their marketing investments.

The strategy appears to be delivering results. Since 2024, the Bulls have secured 18 new commercial partners, including several international brands, as organizations seek more sophisticated ways to connect with consumers.

Industry experts believe the shift reflects a broader transformation in sports marketing. Sponsors no longer view partnerships solely as awareness campaigns; they increasingly want evidence of how sponsorships influence purchasing decisions, consumer behavior and long-term brand loyalty.

For franchises competing for marketing budgets against traditional media companies, streaming platforms and digital advertising channels, data has become a critical differentiator.

The Chicago Bulls’ approach highlights a growing trend across global sports: sponsorships are evolving from branding exercises into measurable business investments, with analytics playing an increasingly central role in proving value to marketers and corporate partners.
