While Argentina continues its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) is under investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) over allegations of possible money laundering and fraud.
The investigation centers on TourProdEnter LLC, a Florida-based company that manages AFA’s sponsorship, commercial rights, and matchday revenues in the United States. According to reports, the AFA transferred more than $300 million through the company into U.S. financial institutions.
The funds were reportedly moved through Citibank, Bank of America, JPMorgan, PNC Bank, and Synovus. Argentine media outlet La Nación reported that approximately $260 million was traced to these bank accounts, while an additional $57 million was transferred to other companies that investigators have not yet been able to identify.
The DOJ has questioned AFA President Claudio Tapia and businessman Guillermo Tofoni regarding the international commercial agreements and the movement of funds. The investigation is focused on whether the transactions complied with U.S. financial and tax regulations.
Authorities are also examining allegations that TourProdEnter receives 30% of AFA’s international commercial revenue and an additional 10% commission on expenses, while reviewing whether those funds were properly declared and taxed.
Argentine media reports have linked some of the money to alleged luxury purchases, including private jets, yachts, and high-end real estate. However, both the FBI and those involved have stressed that no criminal charges have been filed, and the case remains in its preliminary investigative stage.
The timing is notable, as the investigation became public while Argentina prepares for its World Cup quarterfinal against Switzerland.
AFA has built one of the strongest commercial portfolios in international football, securing more than 60 global sponsorship agreements with brands including adidas, HSBC, and American Express. The federation has previously highlighted its international commercial strategy as a key driver of its global growth and sponsorship revenues.
