In a landmark move bridging European football tradition with Major League Soccer’s rapid growth, FC Porto and FC Cincinnati have officially signed a long-term strategic partnership. The agreement was formalized at the FC Porto Museum on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, marking a significant step in the Portuguese club’s global expansion strategy.
A Gateway to the 2026 World Cup
The partnership is a central pillar of FC Porto’s Strategic Plan, which identifies the United States as a priority market. With the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup both set to be hosted in North America, Porto is positioning itself to capitalize on the region’s commercial and sporting maturity.
André Villas-Boas, President of FC Porto, highlighted the importance of this institutional shift:
“This represents a new way for FC Porto to position itself internationally. We are planning to open our first football school in the U.S., and this protocol goes beyond player development—it includes scouting and commercial strategies that will emerge from this relationship.”
Why FC Cincinnati?
FC Porto selected FC Cincinnati due to its organizational stability, world-class infrastructure, and innovative approach within MLS. Since its inception, Cincinnati has quickly risen to become a competitive force, reaching the league semi-finals and winning its first trophy.
For FC Cincinnati, the 10-year agreement offers a chance to learn from one of Europe’s most successful talent-developing clubs.Jeff Berding, President of FC Cincinnati, noted:
“Over the next decade, we want to become a globally respected club. To do that, we must learn from the best. In 2027, as MLS moves to the FIFA standard calendar, this partnership will allow us to be even more active in the global market.”
Key Pillars of the Agreement
The collaboration will focus on four primary areas:
- Youth Development: Sharing coaching methodologies and academy structures.
- Global Scouting: Leveraging Porto’s world-renowned scouting network within the North American market.
- Player Pathways: Creating formal opportunities for player movement between the two clubs.
- Commercial Synergy: Exploring joint marketing initiatives and expanding brand reach across both continents.
