Jeff Bezos could join bid for minority stake in Liverpool

Jeff Bezos could join an investment consortium in talks to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool FC, according to reports.

The group, led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is in discussions with Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool’s owner, over a potential “strategic minority investment” in the Premier League club.

FSG confirmed that discussions with the Bhatia-led group are taking place. Sky News subsequently reported that Bezos had held discussions about joining the consortium, although there is no guarantee that the Amazon founder will ultimately invest.

Liverpool could be valued at $6 billion

According to the Financial Times, a potential deal could value Liverpool at approximately $6 billion.

Bezos, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, has yet to become directly involved in sports ownership. However, his name has repeatedly been linked with major sports franchises, including the Washington Commanders and Boston Celtics, during previous ownership processes.

Bhatia has been a co-owner of EFL Championship club Queens Park Rangers for the past 18 seasons. He stepped down from the club’s board on Tuesday and agreed to transfer his stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

FSG has previously sold a minority stake in Liverpool

Should the deal go ahead, it would not be the first time FSG has sold a minority stake in Liverpool. Private equity firm Dynasty Equity acquired a minority stake in the club in 2023.

Harsh Talikoti of investment bank Houlihan Lokey said the reported $6 billion valuation highlighted how elite sports franchises have evolved from trophy assets into institutional-grade investment opportunities.

Liverpool’s more than 130-year history, 20 English league titles, six European Cups and global fanbase make the club a highly scarce and difficult-to-replicate sports asset, Talikoti said.

Minority investments gaining momentum

The potential Liverpool investment also reflects a broader trend in sports ownership, with investors increasingly using minority stakes as an entry point before potentially pursuing larger ownership positions.

The Mittal family has been building a growing sports investment portfolio. Aditya Mittal holds a minority stake in the Boston Celtics following a reported $1 billion investment, while Lakshmi Mittal acquired Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals for $1.65 billion in May.

If a deal is completed, FSG would retain control of Liverpool while bringing in new capital and investors with an expanding portfolio across global sports.
