Indiana quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza is projected to become the top selection in Thursday night’s NFL Draft, with the Las Vegas Raiders widely expected to take him at No. 1 overall.
According to contract projections from Spotrac, Mendoza is set to sign a four-year, fully guaranteed rookie deal worth approximately $54.6 million, including a $36.1 million signing bonus. If finalized, the contract would surpass Sam Bradford’s long-standing record for rookie guaranteed money, set back in 2010.
The projected deal reflects the continued impact of the NFL’s rookie wage scale, introduced in 2011, which standardized contracts based on draft position. However, a rising salary cap—now projected at $301.2 million per team for the 2026 season—has pushed rookie values to new highs.
Mendoza’s expected average annual value of around $13.6 million would still trail veteran quarterback salaries, but represents a significant investment for a rookie. Analysts note that under the current system, elite quarterbacks like Mendoza remain cost-controlled assets for teams, allowing roster flexibility in other areas.
If selected as expected, Mendoza would follow a recent trend of increasingly lucrative top picks, with each of the past three No. 1 selections setting new benchmarks for rookie earnings.
