The FIFA-backed grassroots development initiative FIFA Arena marked a major milestone in Türkiye as the latest phase of the project was officially inaugurated in Istanbul, bringing together senior political and football figures for a symbolic event centered on youth access to sport.
The opening took place at Spor Toto Teşkilatı Ortaokulu in Riva, where one of multiple newly completed pitches was unveiled as part of a nationwide rollout aimed at expanding football infrastructure for children — particularly in underserved and disaster-affected regions.
A Global Football Push on Turkish Soil
The project, supported by the global governing body FIFA, is designed to improve grassroots access by constructing small-sided pitches in schools and local communities.
According to officials, 11 pitches have already been completed in Türkiye, including several in areas impacted by the devastating February 6 earthquakes.
The initiative forms part of a broader global infrastructure plan aimed at delivering hundreds of community football facilities worldwide.
Infantino Leads High-Profile Delegation
The ceremony was attended by Gianni Infantino alongside Türkiye’s Minister of Youth and Sports Osman AÅŸkın Bak, and senior officials from the Turkish Football Federation (Turkish Football Federation), including president Ä°brahim HacıosmanoÄŸlu.
Also present was Arsène Wenger, who currently oversees global football development programs within FIFA.
Political and Football Messaging Intertwined
Speaking at the event, Minister Bak highlighted Türkiye’s growing football infrastructure network, citing thousands of newly built or planned pitches across the country and positioning the project within a wider national sports investment strategy.
Infantino, meanwhile, praised Türkiye’s footballing achievements and emphasized the country’s role in global football culture, while also highlighting the upcoming expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup as a historic edition featuring 48 teams.
Youth Focus at the Core
Beyond the political messaging, the central theme of the event remained grassroots development — with the FIFA Arena concept aiming to remove barriers for young players and provide consistent access to safe playing environments.
The Riva pitch represents one of several installations that will continue to roll out across Türkiye as part of the wider program.
