FIFA is close to finalising a deal with Zee Entertainment Enterprises for the exclusive broadcasting and digital rights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, according to SportBusiness and industry sources.
Negotiations between FIFA and Zee are reported to be in the final stages, with an official announcement expected soon. If completed, Zee would become the official broadcaster and streaming partner for the tournament in the Indian market.
JioStar dropped from the race
Reports suggest that JioStar (Reliance-Disney joint venture) has stepped back from the bidding process after its financial offer reportedly fell short of FIFA’s expectations. This development has strengthened Zee’s position as the frontrunner.
FIFA has reportedly faced challenges in securing a broadcaster in India, one of its key growth markets, leading to prolonged negotiations.
Deal value around $30–35 million
Industry estimates indicate that the India media rights for the tournament are valued at approximately $30–35 million. FIFA is believed to have initially targeted a higher valuation but adjusted expectations due to market conditions.
Key market for FIFA
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is one of FIFA’s flagship global events. India remains a strategically important market due to its massive audience potential, although securing broadcast rights has proven slower than in other regions.
Once finalised, the deal will secure full broadcast coverage of the tournament in India, significantly expanding access to FIFA’s biggest competition.
