The World Cup is delivering a parallel contest off the pitch, with France overtaking Argentina to return to the top of the global social media rankings.
In the latest Sports Social Pulse index, France climbed back to No. 1 after briefly slipping to second place last week, while Argentina dropped to No. 2. The United States men’s national team (USMNT) held steady at 11th as they progressed into the knockout stage. The data was compiled before Monday’s matches.
The rankings assess national teams across major platforms based on audience size, engagement, growth, visibility, and cross-platform reach.
World Cup drives explosive digital growth
The tournament continues to act as a major accelerator for online audiences. Leading teams are growing their digital followings by 10–14% in just 17 days, roughly equivalent to a full year of organic growth compressed into a fortnight.
France’s rise back to the summit has been powered heavily by TikTok, where the federation has focused on behind-the-scenes content, training footage, and personality-driven lifestyle clips that resonate strongly with younger audiences.
Argentina’s surge, meanwhile, has been driven by Lionel Messi, whose hat-trick against Algeria generated massive global engagement and helped the team add more than 4 million new followers, the highest increase of any nation in the tournament.
Two different paths to digital dominance
The rankings highlight two contrasting strategies at the top:
- France: consistency, performance-driven visibility, and structured content output
- Argentina: superstar effect, with Messi acting as a global engagement engine
Morocco continue rising
One of the standout stories continues to be Morocco, who remain inside the top 10 after strong performances against Scotland and Brazil. The Atlas Lions are increasingly emerging as one of the tournament’s fastest-growing digital brands, particularly across Africa and the Middle East.
As the World Cup progresses, the battle for social media supremacy is proving to be almost as competitive as the action on the pitch.
