La Liga to repeat Retro Matchday with vintage kits

La Liga is preparing to bring back its Retro Matchday initiative next season following the success of its first edition, according to league sources.

The concept saw almost all clubs across Spain’s top two divisions wearing special vintage-inspired kits based on classic designs from past decades, particularly the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. However, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe did not participate, citing various reasons.

The initiative went beyond kits, with retro-style branding also applied to match broadcasts, referee uniforms and even official match balls, creating a fully themed football experience.

The project also tied into the fashion industry, with the retro kits showcased during Madrid Fashion Week. The league estimates that the concept helped generate strong commercial interest, with tens of thousands of collectible shirts produced and a growing nostalgia-driven football merchandise market worth billions globally.

La Liga reportedly believes the initiative could generate between €6.5 million and €7.5 million in additional revenue per club.

Barcelona are said to be open to participating in next season’s edition, while Real Madrid’s position remains uncertain due to ongoing tensions with league leadership. The league continues to position the Retro Matchday as a fusion of sport, culture and fashion designed to modernise fan engagement.
