Only three LaLiga clubs chose not to participate in this weekend’s league-wide “Retro Matchday” initiative, which sees teams wear redesigned kits inspired by historic club shirts.
Real Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, and Getafe opted out of the campaign, according to league sources, while the remaining clubs across LaLiga and LaLiga 2 are taking part in the themed activation.
The initiative, developed in partnership with kit manufacturers, features retro-inspired jerseys, redesigned broadcast graphics, and special referee uniforms across Spain’s top two divisions.
Instead of a historic redesign, Barcelona will wear last season’s kit, while Atlético Madrid will use its 2023/24 home shirt, which features a white-and-blue split design.
The “Retro Matchday” concept is part of LaLiga’s broader strategy to blend nostalgia, merchandising, and fan engagement across multiple commercial touchpoints during the 2026 season.
League officials expect the activation to increase global engagement and strengthen storytelling around club identity, particularly in international broadcast markets.
