LaLiga is expanding its international consulting activity by advising the city of Medellín on the modernization of the Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Colombia.
The Spanish professional football league has signed an agreement with the Medellín City Council to provide expertise on the technological transformation of the stadium, covering areas including connectivity, security, TV production, lighting, sound and digital screens.
The agreement was signed this week following a series of meetings between LaLiga and local authorities to begin assessing the project.
Several public entities are involved in the process, including the Empresa para la Seguridad y Soluciones Urbanas (ESU), Empresa de Desarrollo Urbano (EDU), the Agency for Landscape, Heritage and Public-Private Partnerships (APP), the Medellín Institute of Sports and Recreation (INDER) and the city government.
Exporting LaLiga’s stadium expertise
The project represents another example of LaLiga using its operational and technological experience beyond the Spanish football market.
The league will contribute knowledge developed through the modernization and operation of major football venues, with the objective of adapting those solutions to Medellín’s specific requirements.
Marc Tarradas, LaLiga’s Managing Director for South America, said the organization’s objective is to provide an integrated approach combining technology, security, operations and the fan experience.
The scope of the work could therefore extend beyond physical infrastructure, with the modernization of the stadium also addressing how fans consume matches and interact with the venue.
Medellín targets a more efficient public stadium
Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said the stadium will remain fully publicly owned while adopting management mechanisms traditionally used in the private sector.
The aim, according to the mayor, is to create a venue that is more efficient and professionally managed.
The partnership could also be expanded to other Colombian cities, with Medellín open to extending its collaboration with LaLiga beyond the Atanasio Girardot project.
For LaLiga, the agreement strengthens its role as a provider of sports-industry expertise in international markets, adding stadium technology and operations to its broader portfolio of international commercial and strategic activities.
