LIV Golf continues its aggressive global expansion, selling approximately 90,000 tickets for its debut tournament in South Africa—one of the largest attendances in the league’s short history.

The four-day event is being held at The Club at Steyn City, located just outside Johannesburg, marking LIV’s first-ever appearance on the African continent.

A milestone in global expansion

With this event, LIV Golf reaches its sixth continent in just five seasons, underlining its ambition to build a truly global tour. The South African stop had initially been targeted for later years, but strong local support accelerated its launch.

Home favorite Louis Oosthuizen, captain of the all-South African team, highlighted the significance of finally bringing the tournament to the country after years of planning.

Economic impact and fan experience

The tournament is projected to generate nearly $60 million in economic activity, reflecting the growing commercial weight of LIV events in emerging markets.

A key attraction is the creation of a temporary stadium—dubbed “The Lion’s Den”—around the par-3 17th hole, designed to replicate the high-energy “party hole” atmosphere seen at other LIV events.

Building momentum globally

LIV Golf has found particular success in markets like Australia, where its Adelaide event recently drew a record 115,000 fans. In the United States, its largest event to date attracted 60,000 spectators in Indianapolis.

While these numbers still trail traditional PGA Tour events—where flagship tournaments can exceed 200,000 attendees—the gap is narrowing as LIV strengthens its international footprint.

Long-term commitment to Africa

Although plans for 2027 have yet to be confirmed, LIV Golf has already announced a multi-year commitment to hosting events in South Africa, signaling confidence in the region as a growth market.

As the league continues to blend sport with entertainment-driven formats, its expansion into Africa represents both a strategic milestone and a test of its global appeal.
