The Madrid Regional Government has temporarily suspended Rayo Vallecano’s administrative concession to operate Vallecas Stadium, citing serious maintenance deficiencies and safety concerns identified during a technical audit.
The decision was announced by Mariano de Paco, Madrid’s Regional Minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport, who said inspections revealed alarming shortcomings in the upkeep of the publicly owned venue.
“We carried out an audit of the stadium and the results regarding its maintenance were quite alarming. Maintenance was the club’s responsibility, as was compliance with safety regulations and licensing requirements. We have decided to temporarily suspend the concession so these renovations can be carried out,” De Paco said.
Emergency Renovation Work
The regional government will immediately begin urgent renovation work under a previously approved redevelopment project. Construction is expected to last between two and six months, although officials said the exact timeline remains uncertain.
“We don’t yet know whether it will take two months or six months, but we will keep the public informed as the work progresses,” De Paco added.
Uncertainty Over Rayo’s Home Matches
The decision leaves Rayo Vallecano without a confirmed home stadium for the start of the upcoming LaLiga season.
According to De Paco, both the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and LaLiga have been informed and are working with the club to find a solution.
He also criticized the club for failing to provide documentation requested by the regional government after receiving a formal notice on 12 June regarding the stadium’s deficiencies.
“The club requested an extension because they claimed there was too much documentation to provide. We granted that extension, but they still failed to submit the required information. At present, the stadium’s maintenance does not guarantee spectator safety.”
Government Takes Control of the Stadium
With the concession suspended, the Madrid Regional Government will take over management of the stadium, which it owns.
Officials also said they are not ruling out signing a future management agreement with a third-party operator, rather than returning operational control directly to Rayo Vallecano.
€60 Million Redevelopment Project
Earlier this year, the regional government unveiled a €60 million renovation plan for Vallecas Stadium. The project includes:
- Expanding capacity to 18,500 spectators.
- Building a new end stand.
- Modernizing the stadium’s facilities.
- Constructing a new multi-purpose building adjacent to the venue.
- Preserving the historic identity of Vallecas while upgrading the infrastructure.
The suspension marks a significant turning point in the relationship between Rayo Vallecano and the Madrid Regional Government and raises questions over where the club will play its home matches while the redevelopment is underway.
