Deutsche Telekom’s digital platform, MagentaTV, is securing a historic victory over traditional public broadcasters ARD and ZDF during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Holding the exclusive broadcasting rights for 44 of the tournament’s 104 matches—with the remaining 60 shared simultaneously with public networks—the streaming provider has completely shattered its previous viewership and data traffic milestones within the opening week.
France vs. Senegal clash peaks at 6.5 million viewers
Across the opening days of the tournament, more than 36 million football fans tuned into one of MagentaTV’s three dedicated World Cup channels. The platform’s crown jewel performance came on Tuesday, June 16, during the exclusively broadcasted matchup between France and Senegal. Featuring superstars Kalidou Koulibaly, Habib Diarra, and Kylian Mbappé, the high-stakes fixture drew a record-breaking 6.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched exclusive broadcast in MagentaTV history.
Among other exclusive broadcasts, the Netherlands vs. Japan fixture attracted 4 million viewers, while Germany’s tournament opener against Curaçao pulled in 3.3 million viewers directly via the Telekom platform.
Understanding the metrics: Digital reach vs. traditional TV ratings
MagentaTV’s total reach and peak cumulative figures cannot be directly compared with the traditional average-minute-audience rating systems used by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. For instance, Germany’s opening match under Julian Nagelsmann was watched by an average of 23.43 million linear television viewers on ARD, which featured on-field analysis from Esther Sedlaczek and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Despite the heavy competition from linear television, Telekom’s leadership expressed immense satisfaction with their digital acquisition strategy.
Arnim Butzen (Head of TV at Telekom): “Overall, this was the best week we’ve ever had at MagentaTV. The World Cup has exceeded our expectations in every way. Compared to the European Championships, we have more than doubled our sales in Germany and reached over 6.5 million viewers with our exclusive group matches. This is truly extraordinary.”
Stellar pundit lineup and unprecedented data traffic spikes
Deploying a premium studio lineup featuring Johannes B. Kerner, Thomas Müller, and Jürgen Klopp, MagentaTV successfully accelerated the shift toward digital sports consumption in Germany. Millions of fans streaming the tournament via mobile networks and broadband infrastructure triggered massive, unprecedented loads on Telekom’s data grids:
- During the Germany match, peak mobile data transfer rates hit 2,700 gigabits per second.
- Total bandwidth consumption across MagentaTV channels peaked at a staggering 14,700 gigabits per second during live match windows.
Exclusive knockout stage coverage to come
MagentaTV’s strategic broadcast lock extends far past the group stages. German football fans will be forced to rely on the paid streaming service for several critical knockout fixtures as the tournament progresses. According to the rights agreement, MagentaTV holds exclusive broadcast windows for six Round of 32 matches, three Round of 16 matches, two Quarter-Finals, and the Third-Place Playoff.
