Manchester City has officially unveiled Medlock Square, the definitive name for the sprawling entertainment district currently under construction at the Etihad Campus. This development signals a major pivot in the club’s business model, transitioning the stadium from a fortnightly football venue into a 365-day-a-year global tourist destination.
The North Stand: More Seats, More Safety
The pulse of the project is the significant expansion of the Etihad Stadium’s North Stand.
- Capacity Boost: The expansion adds approximately 7,000 new seats, pushing the stadium’s total capacity well over the 60,000 mark.
- Rail Seating Revolution: In a nod to the safe-standing movement, at least 3,000 of these new seats will feature rail seating, enhancing the matchday atmosphere while maintaining strict safety compliance.
“Medlock Square”: A Lifestyle Destination
The newly dubbed Medlock Square is designed to decouple the club’s revenue from the results on the pitch by offering high-margin hospitality and experiential retail:
- The Medlock Hotel: A groundbreaking addition featuring rooms that overlook the pitch, allowing guests to sleep in the heart of the action.
- Adventure Tourism: City is entering the “adrenaline market” with a stadium roof walk, ziplines, and abseiling experiences. These attractions are designed to operate independently of matchdays to capture the city’s tourism traffic.
- Commercial Infrastructure: The square will house a new flagship megastore, an expanded interactive museum, and a covered 3,000-capacity fan zone to maximize pre-game per-capita spending.
Strategic Insight: The Regeneration Engine
Danny Wilson, Managing Director of City Operations, emphasized that Medlock Square is the “next step” in the long-term regeneration of East Manchester. By creating a world-class entertainment district, Manchester City is:
- Diversifying Income: Mitigating the financial risks of sporting performance through tourism and hospitality.
- Expanding Inventory: Adding new premium bars and hospitality suites to meet the surging demand for corporate “sportainment.”
- Urban Integration: Solidifying the Etihad Campus as a rival to Manchester’s city center for leisure and dining.
