Media Distillery has introduced a new AI-driven Sports Engagement Suite designed to help broadcasters and streaming platforms enhance how fans discover, navigate and consume live and on-demand sports content.
The Amsterdam-based company says the platform automates key parts of the viewing experience — from generating highlights to identifying key moments in real time — as media companies look to extract more value from increasingly expensive sports rights deals.
Turning rights investment into engagement
As competition for premium sports rights intensifies, broadcasters and streamers are under pressure not only to secure content but to ensure audiences actually engage with it.
The new suite is positioned as a solution to that challenge, combining multiple tools into a single system that supports the full fan journey rather than isolated features.
AI-powered highlights and real-time insights
At the core of the platform is an automated highlights tool that can generate match summaries within minutes of the final whistle. The feature allows broadcasters to adjust highlight length and editorial tone depending on audience or platform requirements.
The system will initially support football ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with additional sports such as basketball and ice hockey expected to follow.
Alongside highlights, the platform includes real-time detection of key moments during live events. This enables viewers who join mid-broadcast to quickly catch up on important action without needing to rewind manually.
Improving navigation through content
Another component, Sports Chapters, uses AI-generated markers to break down long-form broadcasts into structured segments. These include chapter titles and summaries that make it easier for viewers to navigate complex programming.
The feature is particularly useful for multi-event broadcasts, where several matches or disciplines may be included within a single stream.
Media Distillery has already tested similar capabilities with platforms such as NLZIET, where AI-assisted navigation helped users move between different sports during unscheduled Winter Olympics coverage.
Extending engagement beyond the live event
The platform also introduces a “Shoulder Content†layer designed to increase engagement beyond live matches. This includes tagging and recommending related content such as interviews, press conferences, line-ups and analysis.
By surfacing additional material within the same ecosystem, the goal is to keep viewers within a single platform for longer periods.
Early results suggest increased retention
In a proof-of-concept with Liberty Global, Media Distillery reported that 77% of subscribers engaged with content they would not have otherwise watched. Additionally, 67% of users said the feature encouraged them to stay within the platform rather than switching to external services.
A response to a competitive streaming landscape
The launch reflects a broader shift in sports media, where platforms are competing not just on rights acquisition but on user experience, personalization and content discovery.
As streaming becomes the primary distribution model for many sports properties, tools that enhance navigation, highlight creation and contextual recommendations are becoming increasingly important.
Outlook
With sports continuing to act as a key driver of subscriber acquisition and retention, platforms like Media Distillery’s Sports Engagement Suite aim to bridge the gap between content availability and actual viewer engagement.
As broadcasters prepare for major global events such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, AI-driven solutions are likely to play a growing role in shaping how fans experience live sports across digital platforms.
