Major League Soccer (MLS) is doubling down on biometric technology. Following a successful trial period, the league has officially expanded its partnership with facial authentication leader Wicket for the 2026 season.
The move marks a significant shift toward “frictionless” event management, moving away from traditional physical credentials and QR codes in favor of facial recognition.
From Innovation Lab to League-Wide Rollout
The collaboration began within the MLS Innovation Lab, a program designed to test emerging technologies in real-world sporting environments. After a “productive” 2025—which saw the tech deployed at the MLS All-Star Game in Austin and various MLS NEXT showcases—the league is now ready to scale.
In 2026, Wicket’s platform will be integrated across:
- MLS NEXT Competitions: Streamlining logistics for thousands of youth players and staff.
- Marquee League Events: Enhancing security and entry speed at flagship tournaments.
- Staff Operations: Managing daily food vouchers and coach check-ins via biometric ID.
Improving the “Ground Game”
The primary goal is operational efficiency. During the 2025 pilot, coaches enrolled in the system in advance, allowing them to breeze through checkpoints without fumbling for badges or phones.
“Wicket’s technology aligns with our goal of delivering best-in-class experiences… which is incredibly valuable during 2026, an iconic year for our sport,” said Chris Schlosser, MLS SVP of Emerging Ventures.
