Netflix Bets Big on Combat Sports: Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano Headlines New Strategy

Netflix has officially set its sights on becoming the global hub for major combat sports events. Following the high-profile announcement of a blockbuster showdown between MMA legends Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano, Netflix’s leadership is clarifying that this move is less about a specific “MMA strategy” and more about the platform’s broader ambition to dominate “event-style” sports programming.

A Focus on High-Profile Events

Speaking at a press event outside the Intuit Dome, Gabe Spitzer, Netflix’s VP of Sports, emphasized that the streaming giant is not looking to build a traditional league-style portfolio. Instead, Netflix is prioritizing content that drives significant member engagement and platform retention.

“We’ve said from the beginning that this is as much an event strategy as it is a sports strategy,” Spitzer told Sports Business Journal. “We saw that these fight events really resonated with our members.”

Netflix’s combat sports calendar is rapidly filling up:

  • The Rousey/Carano Clash: A massive exhibition of star power that headlines Netflix’s current push.
  • Boxing Heavyweights: An upcoming live broadcast featuring Tyson Fury vs. Arslanbek Makhmudov.
  • Mayweather/Pacquiao II: A highly anticipated rematch scheduled for September at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

The “Flywheel” Effect

Netflix’s strategy relies on a “flywheel” model: using marquee live sports to acquire subscribers, then retaining them with the platform’s massive library of non-sports entertainment. “You might come for the Jake Paul/Mike Tyson fights and stay for the new season of Bridgerton,” Spitzer explained. “We don’t necessarily need to have that much sports content.”

Rousey Lashes Out at UFC

The press event was marked by a sharp critique from Ronda Rousey regarding her former employer, the UFC. Rousey did not mince words, labeling the current UFC environment as “one of the worst places” for fighters today.

Key allegations from Rousey included:

  • Short-term Greed: She criticized the promotion for focusing on quarterly profits and shareholder demands at the expense of the sport’s future.
  • Brain Drain: She claimed the league is “bleeding talent” due to the current leadership’s policies.
  • Lost Direction: Rousey suggested that UFC president Dana White has had “the reins of the company taken away from him” since the organization became part of the publicly traded TKO Group Holdings.

Rousey confirmed that her mega-fight with Carano is being promoted by Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian’s Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), rather than the UFC, signaling a growing rivalry between the streaming-first promotion model and the traditional MMA establishment.
