NFL rolls out nationwide flag football push in Australia

The NFL has launched a nationwide grassroots initiative in Australia, providing free flag football kits to schools as part of a broader strategy to expand the sport’s global footprint ahead of the 2026 regular-season game in Melbourne and the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics.

Announced by commissioner Roger Goodell during a youth clinic on the Gold Coast, the program aims to integrate flag football into school physical education systems by removing financial barriers and standardizing access to equipment and coaching resources.

The rollout will begin in Queensland and Victoria before expanding nationwide, with each school receiving kits that include flags, footballs, and structured curriculum material designed for educators and coaches.

The initiative reflects the NFL’s increasing focus on international development, with Australia identified as a key growth market ahead of both its upcoming regular-season game and flag football’s Olympic debut at LA28.

NFL executives say the long-term objective is to build participation pathways from school level to elite competition, leveraging the sport’s rapid adoption in educational systems. The program builds on a pilot launched in 2022, which has already scaled to hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of students.

NFL Australia and New Zealand general manager Charlotte Offord emphasized the goal of equal access, highlighting the league’s ambition to embed the sport broadly across school communities.

The initiative also aligns with broader international development efforts led in coordination with the International Federation of American Football, as flag football continues its push toward sustained Olympic relevance beyond 2028.
