Only Benfica will profit from Mourinho

Claims that José Mourinho could leave Benfica at the end of the season and return to Real Madrid have sparked major discussion across European football. The most striking aspect of the potential move, however, is its financial dimension.

According to reports, if the experienced manager signs a new deal, Benfica would become the only club to financially benefit from a Mourinho departure — despite the Portuguese coach traditionally leaving clubs with costly compensation packages. Due to special clauses in his contract, the Lisbon side is expected to receive around €6 million in compensation.

Throughout his managerial career, Mourinho’s exits have often come at a significant cost for clubs. Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Fenerbahçe and Roma are among the teams that paid substantial compensation to part ways with the Portuguese manager. The total amount of compensation linked to Mourinho throughout his career is believed to have surpassed €100 million.

Meanwhile, Mourinho’s most memorable achievement during his first spell at Real Madrid came in the 2011–12 season, when he guided the club to a historic La Liga title with 100 points. For that reason, the possibility of his return to Madrid is already creating major buzz across Europe.
