In a sharp reversal of his predecessor’s policy, the newly elected Mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, has announced an ambitious plan to sell the Parc des Princes to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before the end of Summer 2026.
Speaking on Franceinfo this Monday, Grégoire confirmed he intends to bypass the previous “no-sale” stance of Anne Hidalgo to ensure the club remains within the city limits.
Key Details of the Proposal
- Emergency Council: An extraordinary Paris Council meeting will be convened in mid-April to vote on the stadium’s future.
- Financial Strategy: The Mayor argues that public funds should not be spent on professional football infrastructure. Instead, the total proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into public green spaces and the maintenance of grassroots sports facilities.
- The Deadline: Negotiations with PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaïfi and club shareholders are set to conclude by the end of August 2026.
The Alternative: Massy vs. Poissy
Despite the Mayor’s olive branch, PSG is not putting all its eggs in one basket. The club is currently awaiting feasibility studies for two potential new-build sites:
- Massy (Essonne)
- Poissy (Yvelines)
These locations would allow for a modern stadium with a capacity of 65,000 to 80,000 seats, significantly higher than the current 48,000 capacity of the Parc des Princes.
