The Primeira Liga is experiencing a period of unprecedented financial growth, with the professional game in Portugal generating record revenues and strengthening its role in the national economy.
According to data released by the league, total revenue across top-flight clubs reached €1.133 billion in the 2024/25 season — the highest figure ever recorded.
Football’s growing economic footprint
The impact of professional football in Portugal now represents 0.32% of the country’s GDP, up 44% year-on-year, highlighting how significantly the sport’s financial footprint has expanded.
Within that, the direct contribution of professional football to GDP is estimated at €956 million, underlining the sector’s increasing weight in the national economy.
Transfers drive explosive growth
A major driver of this record performance has been the transfer market.
Clubs in Portugal’s top division generated €636 million from player sales, a figure that rose by nearly 50% compared to the previous season. This reinforces the league’s long-standing position as one of Europe’s most efficient talent-exporting ecosystems.
Tax contribution and institutional impact
The league also reported €288 million in tax contributions, marking a 7.5% increase year-on-year, further demonstrating the sport’s relevance beyond pure sporting value.
Liga Portugal president Reinaldo Teixeira described the figures as evidence of a sector that is not only growing, but consolidating its economic stability and structural importance.
A model built on trading talent
Portuguese football’s business model continues to rely heavily on player development and international transfers, with clubs acting as key intermediaries in the global talent pipeline.
This structure has allowed the league to remain competitive financially despite operating in a smaller domestic market compared to Europe’s top five leagues.
Europe-wide growth context
The trend in Portugal mirrors broader financial expansion across European football, where commercial revenues, broadcasting deals, and transfer activity continue to push record levels of income across multiple leagues.
