Rome’s Stadio Olimpico set for €130 million renovation ahead of UEFA EURO 2032

Rome’s Stadio Olimpico is set to undergo a €130 million renovation as Italy looks to strengthen its bid to host the UEFA EURO 2032 final. The redevelopment plan, funded by state-owned Sport e Salute, aims to ensure the stadium meets UEFA’s latest infrastructure, commercial, and operational standards while competing with Istanbul to stage the tournament’s showpiece match.

A key part of the project is increasing the stadium’s capacity back to 80,000 seats, matching the level reached during the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The expansion would help satisfy UEFA’s requirements for hosting a European Championship final while boosting ticket inventory and matchday revenue potential.

The redevelopment will also focus on expanding the stadium’s premium hospitality offering. Currently concentrated in the Monte Mario stand, new VIP and corporate hospitality areas will be added on the Tevere side to attract sponsors, corporate clients, and premium guests, creating additional commercial revenue streams.

Further upgrades include replacing the existing giant screens with modern integrated displays and improving the overall fan experience through updated stadium infrastructure.

The project faces a tight timeline. Candidate city dossiers must be submitted to the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) by July 31, while UEFA must receive Italy’s final list of five host venues and five reserve stadiums by October 1.

To be approved, renovation projects must be fully funded, construction-ready by March 30, 2027, and completed before 2031. All selected venues must meet UEFA Category 4 standards, including separate circulation routes for teams, supporters, media, and officials, as well as high levels of safety, accessibility, and environmental sustainability.

With its central location, extensive transport links, and long history of hosting major international sporting events, Rome hopes the modernization project will strengthen Stadio Olimpico’s position as the leading candidate to host the UEFA EURO 2032 final.
