Commercial broadcaster RTL Group has secured a renewal of its Hungarian media rights agreement for the UEFA Champions League, extending its deal through the 2030-31 season.
Under the renewed agreement, RTL will continue to hold rights to every Champions League match in Hungary across the 2027-28 to 2030-31 cycle. The broadcaster already controls rights for the current 2024-25 to 2026-27 period, marking a long-term commitment to Europe’s premier club football competition.
The tender process for the Hungarian market was launched on March 30 by UEFA and its commercial rights agency Relevent Football Partners, with bids submitted by April 27.
RTL originally entered the Champions League market in June 2023, replacing AMC Networks International Central Europe and Hungarian public broadcaster MTVA as the competition’s local rights holders. Prior to that, the broadcaster had focused on UEFA’s secondary club competitions, including the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League.
Hungarian interest in the Champions League has remained strong thanks in part to the performances of national team stars such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez, both currently playing for Liverpool FC.
No Hungarian club, however, reached the league stage of the 2025-26 Champions League season after failing to progress through qualifying playoffs.
The agreement forms part of UEFA’s wider international rights distribution strategy overseen by Relevent, which replaced longtime sales partner TEAM Marketing in late 2024. UEFA finalized several Champions League rights agreements across Europe and the Americas at the end of April, while rights in Europe’s “Big Five” markets — the UK, Spain, Italy, Germany and France — had already been awarded late last year.
