In a significant move to diversify its commercial interests, Serie A has approved the acquisition of a 51% controlling stake in Fantacalcio, Italy’s premier fantasy soccer platform. The deal, valued at €18 million ($21.3 million), gives the league a firm foothold in the rapidly growing digital gaming and fan engagement market.

The investment values Fantacalcio at over $40 million. Notably, the acquisition is being funded via a loan that will be repaid directly from the future proceeds of the Fantacalcio business, ensuring a self-sustaining financial model for the league.

Driving Engagement Through Digital Assets

Serie A President Ezio Simonelli described the assembly meeting as “very calm,” emphasizing that the primary goal is to enhance the platform using official league imagery and exclusive content.

By integrating official assets directly into the fantasy experience, Serie A aims to create a more immersive and “attractive product” for its massive domestic and international following. This vertical integration is a key part of CEO Luigi De Siervo’s broader strategy to transform the league into a modern media and entertainment powerhouse.

Strong Growth and Revenue Metrics

Fantacalcio enters this partnership with a proven track record of profitability and growth:

  • User Base: Between 3 to 7 million registered members (estimates vary by platform).
  • 2025 Performance: Generated over €9 million in revenue with more than €4 million in profit.
  • Monetization: A mix of high-demand advertising and a €12-per-year premium tier for dedicated users.
  • Blue-Chip Sponsors: Existing partnerships include major brands like Eni, Bancomat, and McDonald’s.

Club Vote and Internal Opposition

While the motion passed with a clear majority (15 clubs in favor), it was not unanimous. Napoli, Fiorentina, and Como voted against the deal, primarily citing concerns over the €40 million valuation being too high. Roma and Cremonese chose to abstain from the vote.

Despite these objections, current owners Nino Ragosta and Luigi Cutolo will remain at the helm of operations, ensuring continuity for the platform’s millions of “Fantallenatori” (fantasy managers) while working under the new league-controlled structure.
