Investment platform Sixth Street has formalized the acquisition of a majority stake in Sunderland AFC Women through its multi-club ownership structure, Bay Collective.
The deal, previously reported by Bloomberg as potentially involving up to an 80% stake, marks a significant step in the expansion of Bay Collective’s presence in women’s football. The platform is led by Kay Cossington and aims to apply a centralized management model focused on player development, infrastructure, and long-term sustainability.
With this move, Sunderland AFC Women becomes the second club under Bay Collective, joining Bay FC in the United States’ National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
According to statements from the platform, the strategy includes investing in modern resources for players, coaching staff, and academy systems, while also enhancing operational infrastructure and fan experience. The approach emphasizes building a sustainable growth model and strengthening the club’s competitive position over time.
The acquisition reflects a broader trend of increased private investment in women’s football, as multi-club ownership groups and institutional investors continue to expand their portfolios across the global game.
