MLS side Sporting Kansas City has undergone a major ownership shift, valuing the franchise at a staggering $700 million—one of the highest valuations in league history.
Peter Mallouk, CEO of Creative Planning and a minority shareholder since 2022, has acquired the majority stake from the Illig family. Despite the sale, the Illig family will remain as partners and continue to lead the club’s day-to-day management.
Key Highlights:
- Star Power: The ownership group continues to include NFL legend Patrick Mahomes, further cementing the club’s high-profile status.
- Massive Growth: Since being acquired for a fraction of this price in 2006, the franchise has transformed through a total rebranding in 2011 and the opening of its own world-class stadium and training facilities.
- World Cup Momentum: The deal comes as Kansas City prepares to serve as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, highlighting the region’s growing soccer influence.
