UEFA’s search for a strong challenger to Gianni Infantino in the 2027 FIFA presidential election appears set to hit a dead end, with Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reportedly having no interest in entering the race.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in European football thanks to his executive experience, club leadership and growing political influence within the game, Al-Khelaifi had been viewed as one of the strongest potential alternatives to Infantino. However, the Qatari executive is understood to have no ambition to pursue FIFA’s top position.
On UEFA’s radar
Growing tensions between UEFA and FIFA over the governing body’s commercial strategy have intensified discussions within European football about identifying a credible challenger for the FIFA presidency.
In that context, Al-Khelaifi quickly emerged as one of the leading names due to his role as president of Paris Saint-Germain and his influence across organizations representing Europe’s top clubs.
Seen as a natural candidate
Al-Khelaifi is not only the president of PSG but also one of the most influential football executives in Europe. His leadership roles within European club football, combined with his position at beIN Media Group, have made him one of the sport’s most powerful business figures.
For that reason, many within UEFA viewed him as a natural candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge to Infantino in the 2027 election.
Infantino remains in a strong position
Despite the speculation, Infantino continues to enter the next election cycle from a position of strength.
The FIFA president has overseen significant revenue growth in recent years and continues to enjoy broad support from member associations across Africa, Asia and South America. That voting bloc makes any UEFA-backed challenge mathematically difficult, even before a candidate is identified.
With Al-Khelaifi now understood to be out of the picture, UEFA is expected to continue its search for an alternative candidate capable of challenging Infantino when FIFA members head to the polls in 2027.
