The WNBA is set to finalize its long-awaited expansion plans this week, with new franchises in Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia expected to be approved by team owners.
The expansion, first announced more than nine months ago, requires majority approval from both WNBA and NBA governors, as well as a three-quarters vote from WNBA Holdings LLC. A final decision is anticipated by April 9, with approval widely considered a formality.
Each franchise carries an expansion fee of $250 million, payable in installments before their debut seasons. However, investor interest has already driven valuations higher in two markets. Cleveland has raised capital at a $290 million valuation, while Detroit has reached $325 million.

The ownership group plans to bring in Comcast as a minority investor, while committing at least $50 million toward a new practice facility. The team is expected to play at Xfinity Mobile Arena if a planned new venue is not completed in time.
