WNBA eyes first international game in 2027 as global expansion accelerates

The WNBA is preparing to take a historic step beyond North America, with plans to stage its first-ever international game in 2027 as part of a broader push to globalize the competition.

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert confirmed during the WNBA Draft that the league is actively exploring hosting a regular-season game outside the United States for the first time in its history, describing the idea as being under serious consideration.

The move would mark a significant milestone for a league that has traditionally been domestically focused, but is now rapidly expanding its international footprint.

Toronto expansion sets the tone

The league has already taken its first structural step abroad with the addition of a franchise in Toronto, making it the WNBA’s first team outside the United States.

That expansion is part of a wider strategy aimed at increasing global visibility, strengthening commercial reach, and positioning the league as an exportable sports product rather than a purely domestic competition.

A broader commercial strategy

Alongside expansion, the WNBA is entering a new phase of financial growth driven by:

  • New global media rights agreements
  • Franchise expansion into international markets
  • A revamped collective bargaining agreement

Engelbert noted that the new CBA — expected to run into hundreds of pages — is nearing completion and will include major structural changes to player compensation, benefits, and long-term financial planning.

Salaries and long-term projections rising sharply

The league is projecting substantial salary growth through 2032, with expectations that average player earnings could more than double compared to current levels.

The salary cap is also expected to rise significantly over the life of the agreement, reflecting increased league revenues and stronger commercial positioning.

Minimum salaries have already seen a notable increase under the current framework, signaling a broader upward shift in the league’s economic structure.

A league pushing beyond borders

From expansion into Canada to potential games in Europe or other global markets, the WNBA is clearly entering a new phase: one defined not just by growth in the United States, but by international presence.

If the 2027 game goes ahead, it would represent more than just a fixture — it would mark the beginning of the WNBA’s transformation into a truly global league.
