World Cup final draws millions of viewers across Europe

Spain’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final attracted huge television audiences in both finalist nations, while millions more tuned in across Europe’s major broadcast markets.

Spain secured its second World Cup title after its inaugural triumph in 2010. The final, played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, attracted an average audience of 15.7 million viewers in Spain, while reaching 20.1 million unique viewers overall.

The match was broadcast in Spain across national public broadcaster RTVE’s La1, La2 and Teledeporte channels, as well as DAZN, which secured a package of World Cup rights in February.

La1 delivered the largest audience among the broadcasters, reaching a peak of 14.8 million viewers as the final whistle was blown. Overall, the match achieved an 87.1% audience share in Spain.

Spain’s semi-final victory over France had previously attracted an average audience of 14.6 million viewers.

Final attracts a 46% rating in Argentina

Argentina’s attempt to defend the World Cup title it won in 2022 also generated enormous interest despite the team’s defeat in the final.

The free-to-air broadcasts on Telefe and TV Pública achieved a 46.0 rating, meaning that 46% of the measurable audience was watching coverage on those channels.

The final was also broadcast by pay-TV network TyC Sports, which recorded a 15.5 rating.

Argentina’s semi-final victory over bitter rivals England had attracted around 31.8 million viewers on Telefe alone.

Peak audience of 17 million in the UK

The final also attracted significant audiences outside the home markets of the two finalists.

In the UK, approximately 17 million viewers watched the match at its peak, while the average audience across public broadcaster BBC and commercial network ITV reached 12.1 million.

The vast majority of that audience watched the BBC’s coverage, which attracted 9.7 million viewers. ITV’s coverage, including the match and surrounding preview and analysis programming, drew 2.4 million viewers.

Both broadcasters covered the tournament under a World Cup rights agreement announced in late 2024.

17.36 million viewers in Germany

In Germany, public broadcaster ZDF recorded an average audience of 17.36 million viewers for the final.

Deutsche Telekom’s Magenta TV platform also showed the match, although its audience figures have not yet been released.

The final was by far the most-watched World Cup match in Germany that did not involve the German national team, which was eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32.

The audience was significantly higher than the figure recorded for the 2022 World Cup final, when Argentina defeated France on penalties. That match attracted fewer than 14 million viewers in Germany.

12.24 million viewers in France

In France, free-to-air coverage of the final on TF1 attracted an average audience of 12.24 million viewers.

The figure represented a 59.2% audience share.

However, the audience was roughly half the number of viewers who watched the 2022 World Cup final, when France was competing for the title.

World Cup final becomes Italy’s most-watched free-to-air match of 2026

In Italy, the Spain-Argentina final became the most-watched football match on free-to-air television in the country during 2026.

Public broadcaster Rai reported an audience of 12.45 million viewers on its main Rai 1 channel, generating a 67.95% audience share.

The match was also available on DAZN, although the streaming platform has not yet released its Italian viewing figures.

The final audience was slightly higher than the 12.2 million Italians who watched the national team lose to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in the World Cup play-off qualifiers.

The 2022 World Cup final, meanwhile, attracted an audience of 12.94 million viewers on Rai 1.

Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina after 120 minutes, secured by Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal, once again demonstrated that the World Cup is not only a global sporting competition but also one of the most powerful television audience events in the world.
