Spurs use AI to power fan ‘tunnel walk’ experience

The San Antonio Spurs are leaning into artificial intelligence as a core pillar of their fan engagement strategy, launching a new platform called Spurs AI Studio in collaboration with OpenAI and longtime NBA partner Michelob ULTRA.

At the center of the initiative is “ULTRA Arrivals,” a feature that allows fans to upload a selfie and transform it into a 15-second video styled like an NBA player’s pregame entrance — the now-iconic “tunnel walk.” The tool uses generative AI to create realistic, broadcast-style footage, placing supporters inside the spectacle typically reserved for players.

The project reflects a broader organizational shift. The Spurs have already piloted internal AI adoption, with more than half of a 150-person test group actively using generative tools. Rather than treating AI as a one-off campaign, the franchise is positioning it as infrastructure — a way to create entirely new categories of digital inventory and fan-facing products.

Commercially, the model opens new revenue pathways. By effectively selling fans the chance to “be part of the show,” the Spurs are turning personalization into a monetizable asset. The partnership with Michelob ULTRA — a global NBA sponsor for more than two decades — underscores the scale and intent behind the rollout.

The platform is also built for virality. Fans are encouraged to share their videos across social media using campaign hashtags, shifting marketing from passive consumption to user-generated distribution. If adoption scales, the Spurs’ approach could serve as a blueprint not just across the NBA, but for sports, entertainment and esports properties looking to blend AI with fan identity and participation.
