Atlético de Madrid has announced a multi-season technological transformation of the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, partnering with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). The project aims to deploy an advanced AI-managed network infrastructure to redefine fan connectivity, operational efficiency, and stadium sustainability.
The upgrade involves the installation of over 1,500 AI-managed Wi-Fi access points, set to be completed in two phases across the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons.
Building Europe’s Most Intelligent Stadium
By integrating HPE Aruba Central, an AI-driven IT operations platform, Atlético de Madrid is positioning its home ground as one of the most technologically advanced venues in Europe. The platform will monitor and optimize network demand in real-time, ensuring seamless high-speed connectivity even during sold-out matches.
The “Smart Network” goes beyond simple internet access; it allows the club to deploy new digital services and enhances the overall match-day experience through real-time data analytics.
Sustainability and Operational Intelligence
A standout feature of this partnership is the commitment to environmental goals through Green AP technology.
- Energy Efficiency: Access points will automatically enter a deep power-saving mode when inactive, significantly reducing the stadium’s total electricity consumption.
- Crowd Management: The AI system will provide detailed heat mapping and movement analysis, helping security and logistics teams optimize crowd flow and safety within the venue.
Óscar Mayo, Atlético’s General Director of Revenue and Operations, noted that the upgrade allows the club to operate a network that evolves with the fans’ needs, supporting the club’s broader vision of a digitally integrated sports ecosystem.
Strengthening the Global Partnership Portfolio
The technology deal with HPE adds to Atlético de Madrid’s growing roster of high-profile global partners, including Riyadh Air (naming rights sponsor until 2033), EA Sports, and LG Electronics. These collaborations reflect the club’s “Atleti Family” strategy, focused on innovation and enhancing the value of its billion-euro stadium asset.
