FC Barcelona has launched Barça Fan Lab, a new digital fan platform developed with technology partner Andamio and built on the Cardano blockchain, as the club explores new ways to engage and recognise supporters through Web3 technology.

The platform integrates with BarçaID and allows fans to complete learning programmes and community activities before receiving verifiable digital credentials and access tokens stored in an individual Cardano-based Web3 portfolio.

The project is supported through Cardano’s Project Catalyst Fund 13, a community-driven grant programme.

From fan account to digital identity

Barça Fan Lab builds on FC Barcelona’s existing BarçaID ecosystem, adding a blockchain-based layer to the club’s digital fan strategy.

Users can create a digital portfolio linked to their profile, which can then be used to receive and store credentials and access tokens earned through participation.

The initial focus is not on selling digital assets but on education, participation and community engagement. Fans can move through different content pathways, complete activities and receive verifiable recognition for their involvement.

Barcelona said the longer-term ambition is to develop a scalable participation model that could eventually be used across its global supporter base.

Four areas of fan engagement

The platform is divided into four main areas covering the club’s culture, social initiatives and potential Web3 applications.

One section focuses on Barcelona’s history, identity and the meaning behind “Més que un club”. Another covers sustainability, inclusion, women’s empowerment, technology and responsible digital innovation.

The remaining areas explore the connection between physical communities and digital participation, as well as practical applications of Web3 technology.

Potential use cases include digital credentials and collectibles, blockchain-based loyalty systems, fan recognition, digital portfolios, NFTs and smart contracts.

The club has presented these applications as areas for experimentation and education rather than confirming that all of them will immediately become commercial products.

Andamio provides the technology infrastructure

Andamio is providing the technology infrastructure behind Barça Fan Lab, with Cardano used to support verifiable credentials and other Web3 functionality.

The project is also backed by Cardano’s Project Catalyst Fund 13, through which projects are proposed, evaluated by the Cardano community and selected through a voting process.

For Barcelona, the initiative represents another experiment in turning its global supporter base into a digitally connected community.

Rather than focusing solely on collectibles or cryptocurrency, Barça Fan Lab places the emphasis on participation and digital recognition. The model could give the club additional tools to understand and reward fan engagement while creating a digital layer around its existing BarçaID ecosystem.

The commercial potential of the platform will depend on how effectively those digital credentials and participation mechanisms can eventually connect with the club’s wider ecosystem, including membership, content, loyalty and fan experiences.
