Google and NR Sports have partnered to digitally recreate what Pelé himself described as the greatest goal of his career, using artificial intelligence to bring back one of football’s most legendary moments that was never captured on video.
The project reconstructs the iconic goal Pelé scored at São Paulo’s Rua Javari Stadium on August 2, 1959—a strike that has long been regarded by the Brazilian legend as the finest of his career despite never being filmed.
According to those who witnessed the match, Pelé dribbled past defenders with a sequence of three consecutive chips before lifting the ball over the goalkeeper and finishing without allowing it to touch the ground.
AI recreates a lost piece of football history
To accurately reproduce the historic moment, NR Sports—the company managing Pelé’s global commercial rights—assembled a multidisciplinary team that included historians, journalists, members of Pelé’s family and eyewitnesses to the match.
The team analyzed archival photographs, historical documents and architectural details of Rua Javari Stadium to help AI recreate both the environment and the movement of players as faithfully as possible.
The initiative forms part of NR Sports’ broader strategy to preserve and expand Pelé’s legacy following its acquisition of the Pelé Brand in late 2025. The company also manages the commercial image rights of Neymar.
“From the moment we took over management of the Pelé Brand, our commitment has been to preserve his history while finding new ways to keep it alive,” said Neymar da Silva Santos, CEO of NR Sports and father of Neymar Jr.
“This partnership with Google demonstrates how technology can connect the past with the future while respecting the King’s legacy.”
Documentary accompanies the project
The extensive research behind the AI reconstruction has also been turned into a documentary exploring the history of the goal and the technological process used to recreate it.
Neymar appears in the production, reflecting on Pelé’s lasting influence on football.
“Pelé inspired generations and continues to inspire today,” Neymar said. “Being part of a project that introduces his story to people who never had the chance to watch him play is something very special. Technology helps immortalize what changed football forever.”
Google’s growing AI strategy in sports
The collaboration also highlights Google’s increasing use of sport to showcase its artificial intelligence technologies.
The company, which develops the Gemini AI platform, has expanded its sports marketing activities through sponsorships with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gemini was also integrated into CazéTV’s tournament broadcasts through campaigns encouraging viewers to use AI-powered image generation tools.
As technology companies compete for visibility in the rapidly evolving AI sector, sport continues to provide one of the world’s most powerful storytelling platforms—and recreating one of football’s greatest unseen moments may be among the most compelling demonstrations yet.
