Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced a strategic partnership with data software leader DataGrail to modernize its fan data management. This move is a cornerstone of the league’s broader digital transformation and governance strategy as it prepares for massive growth ahead of the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Centralizing Privacy and the “Fan Genome 360”
The agreement mandates a formal privacy management platform across the league. While 23 MLS clubs will directly onboard DataGrail, the remaining seven will utilize approved third-party solutions, ensuring 100% compliance coverage.
Key Features of the Partnership:
- Automated Data Mapping: Discovery across 2,500 systems to ensure no data point is left unmanaged.
- Fan Genome 360: Personal data within this intelligence platform will now be handled through automated privacy workflows.
- Scalable Governance: Individual clubs gain the tools to operate independently while giving the league centralized visibility and control.
- Personalized Consent: Fans will experience a more transparent and tailored data consent process.
“A Critical Moment for Global Soccer”
MLS Chief Information Officer John Sullivan highlighted the intersection of technology and sports:
“We’re in one of the most important moments in the evolution of global soccer, where data, AI, and fan engagement are becoming deeply interconnected. This establishes a scalable governance model in a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.”
Daniel Barber, CEO of DataGrail, added that the platform is specifically built for the complexity of multi-entity organizations like the MLS, helping to strengthen their brand while minimizing digital risk.
