François-Régis Picolet, General Manager of the Stade de France, described the event as a strategic move to position the venue among the world’s most elite sporting arenas. “Hosting an NFL regular-season game in France for the first time is a major step in our international strategy,” Picolet stated.
Engineering a Gridiron in Paris
Adapting the historic venue for American football presents unique operational challenges. Unlike soccer or rugby, the NFL requires strict adherence to specific league standards, necessitating significant modifications to the stadium’s infrastructure:
- Field Modifications: The pitch requires an extension in length, the installation of specialized goalposts, and custom field markings, all while preserving the integrity of the playing surface.
- Logistical Scaling: With team contingents reaching up to 120 people per side—including expansive medical and technical staffs—locker rooms and training areas are being significantly retrofitted.
- Broadcasting Power: The NFL’s sophisticated production requirements demand a massive increase in technical infrastructure to handle one of the most advanced audiovisual setups in global sports.
A Strategic Economic Driver
Beyond the spectacle on the field, the event is expected to serve as a significant economic engine for the Seine-Saint-Denis territory. With approximately 30% of the audience expected to travel from abroad, the city’s hospitality, transport, and restaurant sectors are bracing for a major influx of visitors.
Picolet noted that the project is a hybrid effort, blending the high-octane “Fan Experience” standards of the NFL with traditional French hospitality and gastronomy. “Our goal is to integrate the spectacular codes of the American league while showcasing French expertise in hosting and culinary arts,” he added.
