USMNT uses brainwave technology to turn penalty shootouts into a science at World Cup

The United States men’s national team (USMNT) has turned to cutting-edge brainwave technology in its preparation for penalty shootouts at the 2026 World Cup, aiming to gain a marginal but potentially decisive edge in football’s most high-pressure moments.

With several knockout matches already decided from the spot in this tournament, the margin between success and failure has never been thinner. In response, the USMNT has worked since early 2025 with German neurotechnology firm Neuro11 to monitor players’ brain activity during penalty practice sessions.

Players are equipped with wearable sensors attached to the head and body while taking penalties under simulated pressure. Staff then analyze brainwave data to measure concentration levels and emotional control, with the goal of identifying each player’s optimal mental state when stepping up to the spot.

The system is designed to replicate aspects of match pressure, including crowd noise and distraction attempts from staff, even though coaches acknowledge that true World Cup tension cannot be fully recreated in training.

According to players and staff, the technology provides feedback on focus levels and helps determine where each player performs best in the goal, as well as how they respond psychologically under stress.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino admitted that no training environment can perfectly simulate the emotional weight of a World Cup shootout. However, he emphasized that the goal is to narrow the gap between training and reality as much as possible.

Players have described the system as unusual and even uncomfortable at times, involving head-mounted sensors, body equipment, and simulated stadium noise. Despite this, several members of the squad say it has helped improve consistency from the penalty spot.

Midfielder Diego Luna noted that repeated sessions showed measurable improvement in conversion, while other players highlighted the value of understanding how their concentration changes under pressure.

The technology is part of a broader performance strategy aimed at gaining small advantages in set-piece situations, including free kicks and corners, which are often decisive in knockout football.

Coaches also use analytical models to determine preferred shooting zones and “high-probability” scoring areas. Players are then trained to target these zones, or adapt alternative placements based on individual comfort levels.

If a player is unable to consistently hit optimal areas under pressure, they may be excluded from the designated penalty takers list, underlining how data-driven decision-making has become central to squad selection.

USMNT have already experienced success in a penalty shootout under Pochettino, and staff believe that psychological readiness could be as important as technical ability in advancing through the knockout stages.

While the technology is not publicly visible during the World Cup itself, the team has confirmed that penalty preparation continues behind closed doors.

As the tournament moves deeper into knockout rounds, where margins are razor-thin and shootouts increasingly decisive, the USMNT’s use of neuroscience-based training highlights a broader trend: modern football is becoming as much about mental engineering as physical performance.
