The 2026 FIFA World Cup was not only the largest tournament in history, with 48 teams, 16 stadiums and 104 matches. It also served as a testing ground for new approaches to broadcast production, remote operations and digital content creation.
Following Spain’s victory over Argentina in the final, Sports Video Group (SVG) analysed the production innovations and operational shifts that defined the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
More than 125 cameras covered the final
The final between Spain and Argentina featured one of the most extensive broadcast productions in World Cup history. Host broadcaster HBS expanded its coverage plan to more than 60 cameras.
More than 125 cameras operated inside and around the stadium across the match, opening ceremony, half-time show and supporting productions. The core match production included 60 cameras and 57 microphones, supported by 54 replay systems and 14 additional channels serving the tournament’s multiple feeds.
Super slow-motion cameras, cranes behind both goals, Spidercam, drones, a helicopter and pitch-side Steadicams were all part of the production.
16 stadiums, 16 independent production teams
One of the tournament’s most significant operational innovations was its decentralised production model. For the first time, FIFA and HBS operated 16 independent production teams across 16 stadiums.
Each venue had its own team responsible for the main match production during the group stage. Replay, audio mixing, graphics and shading operations, however, were managed remotely from Dallas.
The model could become one of the tournament’s most lasting legacies and a blueprint for future major sporting events.
Broadcasters moved away from traditional OB vans
The geographical scale of the tournament pushed broadcasters towards remote production models rather than traditional outside broadcast vehicles.
German broadcasters ARD and ZDF operated without OB vans, while Deutsche Telekom’s MagentaTV produced most of its coverage from Munich.
The BBC and ITV also adopted remote production strategies. ITV kept its vision-mixing operation in London while basing its studio team in Brooklyn. The BBC operated with a 15-person team at the Dallas IBC, feeding Salford over a 20Gbps connection.
HBS operated a 400-person content hub from London
HBS also created a remote London-based facility for non-live content production and rights-holder support.
The 400-person hub handled a wide range of formats, including social media clips, TikTok-specific edits and longer highlights packages. The operation enabled content captured across the United States, Canada and Mexico to be processed and distributed from Europe.
Creators became part of the production plan
The 2026 World Cup was also the first edition in which digital creators were formally integrated into the production ecosystem.
Alongside FIFA’s live match and creator-access partnership with YouTube, HBS incorporated influencers into its official broadcast operation. The approach highlighted the increasingly blurred line between traditional sports broadcasting and the creator economy.
Referee cameras made their World Cup debut
Referee-mounted cameras were used across the tournament for the first time, giving viewers a first-person perspective from the pitch.
While audio was not used during live matches, the footage was made available for highlights and content distributed through broadcasters and FIFA’s YouTube channel. Referee-camera footage from the Mexico-England match alone generated 90,000 views on FIFA’s channel.
DAZN delivered three markets from one hub
DAZN also demonstrated the potential of centralised production by delivering localised coverage for Italy, Spain and Japan from a single production hub.
The model allowed the broadcaster to meet the needs of three different markets from one central operation, with monitoring, transmission control and support services running continuously.
The 2026 World Cup was therefore more than the biggest football tournament ever staged. It became a large-scale test of the future of sports broadcasting.
Decentralised production, remote workflows, augmented reality, creator-led content and centralised multi-market operations all emerged as defining trends — and could shape how major sporting events are produced long after the final whistle in North America.
