Arsenal FC has launched a new short film directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee, marking the first collaboration between the club and the renowned director as part of its commercial activation with global fintech partner Airwallex.
Titled Who Are Ya?, the project reflects a growing trend in football marketing toward narrative-driven content, blending storytelling with brand integration rather than relying on traditional sponsorship visibility.
Set in a classic pub environment, the film subverts expectations by shifting the conversation from match analysis to financial terminology—highlighting how modern fans increasingly engage not only with the sport but also with its business dynamics.
The production features a mix of current players, club legends and cultural figures, including Thierry Henry, creating a crossover between football culture and broader entertainment. The storytelling approach emphasizes authenticity and humor while subtly incorporating the partner brand.
Visually, the film carries Spike Lee’s signature style, including the iconic “double dolly†shot, adding a cinematic layer rarely seen in club-led branded content.
The activation underscores Airwallex’s intention to stand out through creativity rather than traditional logo placement. “We didn’t want to be a random logo,†said Global Creative Director Matt Jennings, emphasizing a strategy focused on memorable fan engagement.
From the club’s perspective, the project aligns with a broader commercial philosophy. Chief Commercial Officer Juliet Slot highlighted the importance of partnerships that deepen fan connection and elevate the supporter experience.
With this initiative, Arsenal FC continues to explore innovative ways to merge football, culture and commerce—positioning content-led storytelling as a key pillar in modern sponsorship strategy.
